Dear ELMA Members, I am happy to release the 6th edition of ELMA DIRECTORY - 2004. Last year we have seen two consecutive budgets, reducing the customs duty further on finished products. On the other hand the cost of our raw materials mainly Metal sheets, Copper, Core, Batteries & even electronics components rising. We have also noticed local manufacturers are preferring imports rather than manufacturing themselves. With the WTO deadline of ZERO customs duty on IT products just due on 1st April 2005, the overall scenario for local manufacturer seems gloomy. On the other hand reduction in price has generated volumes & opens tremendous opportunity for those who can remain competitive. People ask about diversification. I suggest "Not to do different things but to do the same thing differently to remain competitive in the market." 51% of India's GDP comes from service sector & will continue to grow in double digit in the next 10 years, in countries like Singapore, Hongkong etc it is 80% plus. So emphasis should be given in sector too. Knowledge based Industry, BPO sector, Embedded systems has opened new opportunities. Although sincere efforts were made to publish this directory completely & correctly, errors may persist. Which leaves the scope to make the next edition much better. Rajiv K Poddar
