Seminar on Opportunities in Solar Energy
A seminar was organized by ELMA on Opportunities in Solar Energy in the auditorium of Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry at 23 RN Mukherjee Road, Kolkata - 700 001 at 3 PM on Tuesday, the 9th March, 2004. Amongst the distinguished guests and speakers, there were Dr. SP Gon Chaudhuri. Director West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency, Prof. Sujoy Bose from Jadavpur University and Prof. Susanta Sen of
Calcutta University. The eve was sponsored by Amara Raja Batteries Limited having their Registered Head Office in Hyderabad and Regional Office in Kolkata. Members in huge numbers were present to hear the technology from the learned speakers.

At the beginning of the seminar, Mr, Champak Kundu, the President of EMA welcome the members and the guests and enunciated the power position of the state and electricity act as revised in 2003 and illustrated the need of captive power generation systems and highlighted the need of emergence of technology using solar energy as an alternative source for power.

Mr. Rajiv K Poddar, Hony Secretary ELMA too described the present power scenario in the state of West Bengal and opined on the need of solar energy as the only possible alternative to the electricity. In his speech, Mr. Poddar described in details the captive power conditions in the state as a substitute of electricity. He also requested the learned speakers to enlighten the gathering on the subject for a brighter tomorrow.


In his speech. Dr. Gon Chaudhury narrated the role of his department under Government of West Bengal and the success in the remote areas where conventional electricity is scarce in the remote areas of the state. He assured the members of ELMA towards support in all respect for manufacturing the alternate captive power generation solar systems in the future. He narrated that serious works have been done by WEBREDA towards electrification of villages in Sunderbans using solar energy. Off grid home lighting systems in Sunderbans are classic examples for proper utilization of solar energy where geographically it is not possible to provide electricity through grid lines.

Prof. Sujoy Bose and Prof Susanta Sen briefed the gathering about the technology used in the solar system, possible resources and assembling of the spares and their utilities. They also highlighted the advantages and shortcoming of the solar systems and vowed to render their expertise on the matter. There had been an interactive session between the speakers and the members present.


Mr. D Kalyan Ram, the Sr. Marketing Engineer of Amara Raja batteries Ltd made a short digital presentation on the batteries they manufacture and the technology they adhere.

Mr. DP Chattopadhyay, the Immediate Past Secretary of ELMA presented the vote of thanks to all. The seminar ended with high tea and interpersonal discussion during the tea time.
