Tolly
Film Review - Bombayer Bombete
|
| |
 |
After
23 years again the evergreen detective Feluda (a character
created by Satyajit Ray) appeared on the tollygunge big
screen. Sandip Ray, the eminent director and son of versatile
personality Satyajit Ray, took this venture with the production
of Ramoji Films to entertain us and as well as the younger
bengali readers who are very much fond of Feluda. In the
Satyajit's films the role of Feluda was acted by Soumitra
Chattopadhyay. But in this film Sandip has chosen Sabyasachi
Chakraborty as Feluda and Parambrata as 'Topsey'. Bombayer
Bombete is, in fact, a continuation of what senior Ray
captured in 1970s in films Sonar Kella and Joi Baba Felunath.
|
After the sudden death of eminent actor Santosh Dutta,
Satyajit became very much disappointed and stopped to
make any film on Feluda. Because the very famous comedian
'Jatayu' is one of the main characters of the 'Feluda
series'. In one word, except Jatayu, Feluda series is
incomplete. Bibhu Bhattacharya, the new but efficient
actor has conquered the bengali sentiment. Many of the
viewers were still pessimistic before a few days ago that
nobody will be able to act the role of Jatayu, as it was
acted by Santosh Dutta. But it is proved wrong by Bibhu
Bhattacharya.

The
main story of this film is related with smuggling of Nana Saheb's
precious chain 'Naulakha' studded with diamond and all other
precious stones. In the story Jatayu wrote a beautiful screenplay
with full of action 'Bombayer Bombete'. Pulak Ghoshal, one of
his friends lives in Mumbai is willing to make a film after
this story. So Jatayu was invited to Mumbai to observe the shooting
of big budgeted film. Jatayu took his friend, philosopher &
guide Feluda and his cousin Topsey. While they were taking preperation
to go to Mumbai, Mr. Sanyal (a person was also willing to make
that particular film) gave a book named 'The life divine' to
Jatayu to hand over the book to a particular person in Mumbai.
That book was not the simple book. Actually it was the container
of stolen precious chain and it was being smuggled to Mumbai
through Jatayu. But Jatayu knows nothing about this. They faced
various problems at Mumbai for this chain. At last with the
help of intelligence of Feluda the Mumbai Police caught the
original culprit. Ashis Vidyarthi played the role of villain
excellently.
|
| The
film is produced by Rama Naidu of ETV, Hyderabad, and
has been shot in Mumbai and Araku valley in Hyderabad.
The screenplay closely follows what is there in the original
story and the suspense is sustained all through. The quaint
part of Feluda series is that violence seldom finds a
place in it. Instead, the brain confronts bigger challenges
with delicate twists and comic edges. And these are not
necessary in the film. The film has no female character
and it is surprising. However, the film is made so engrossing
that you won't feel the absence. |

Added
to it is the release of Sandip Ray's new film Bombayer Bombete,
triggering off a rush of emotional response among the young
and the old in one breathe in the city and around. And the mercury
at the box-office, with each show, seems rising and rising ever
high. Very first week forecasts a bright new year for Bengali
cinema. Figures in at least ten main theatres in the city where
the film is running with its own rhythm show an unbelievably
upward trend and register a massive box-office record. It's
a very good sign for Bengali cinema. |
