Hemanter
Pakhi : Hemanter Pakhi is a Bengali Film made
in Tollygunge studio, directed by Urmi Chakraborty. It
was the dream of Urmi to make a film with unbending ideas
and passé ideologies. Her maiden venture has bagged
the most prestigious National Award for the Best Film
category. Produced by National Film Development Corporation,
the film has created sensation in national and international
market. The film is made on |
| the
book authored by notable writer Suchitra Bhattachary.
Key actor of the film is Parambarta Chattopadhya and actress
Tanusree Shankar. |

Urmi says that Loneliness is universal. My film is probably
a take off from Satayajit Ray's Charulata. The dame trapped
in her family duties and finally starts searching her own identity.
My protagonist Aditi wants to write poetries and publish them.
Hemen mama plays the main role in motivating Aditi into the
world of creativity. The attitude of patriarchal society is
that, they always take woman for granted. If I quote author
Mark Rotho "Mute icons are the only kind of beauty we find
acceptable today."
The author Suchitra Bhattacharya says that Urmi has slightly
changed the climax sequence of my story, but I have liked it.
In fact film and literature are two different medium. One has
to be independent in order to sustain for a long run. Urmi has
used cinematic language to express my thoughts. I believe in
the ideology of Edward Abbey, who writes, "Good writing
can be defined as having something to say and saying it well.
When one has nothing to say, one should remain silent. Silence
is always beautiful at such times." I strictly oppose to
the idea that this film is a feminist film. We should not demarcate
films on gender issues.
The heroine Tanusree Shankar says that When Urmi approached
me with the script I was moved. I immediately read Suchitra's
original piece and could relate the problem every easily. As
a human being I feel that this is a common crisis that is faced
by each and every woman in middle-class Bengali family. Aditi
is not just a protagonist; she is a symbol of innumerable Aditi
in our society. Those who have seen the film in Kolkata Film
Festival feels that this was an issue that was yet untouched
upon. As a dancer it was slightly difficult for me to emote
under toned expression but Urmi was a nice guide to work with.
Infact this is the first film where I act with Mamata Shankar.
I have a very countable filmography. I was never interested
in doing run of the mill stories. Whatever I do, I prefer to
do solid. The impact of an actress must stay much after she
fades out from the showbiz world.
The hero Parambrata Chattopadhya said that "..my father
Satinath Chattopadhyaya and mother Sunetra Ghatak has been instrumental
in mending my thoughts regarding meaningful cinema. Urmidi is
a great director and she is absolutely sure of what she wants.
I play the character of Aditi's younger son, who is extremely
possessive about her mother. He dislikes her mothers' involvement
with publishers and other people related to her creative field.
He has taken his mother 'for granted'. It is not a negative
character, but a character that has shades of reality. If we
look at ourselves on mirror we would find a close similarity
to what Urmidi has shown in Hemanter Pakhi.
