Purulia

A city with traditional background is located in the western flange of West Bengal, 200 kilometers away from Kolkata. Purulia is also the name of a district in the state. It is an ideal place to have week end tour from Kolkata. Located at the edge of the state bordering by neighboring state Bihar, the town is surrounded by hills and plateaus where one can find the leisure with the hilly and forest culture together.

The place Purulia is remembered for the traditional Santhals - an age-old tribe famous for their heritage, craftsmanship, Chow Dance and heroic movement against the British Raj in India.

Amongst the important tourist's spots in the town, are the Kansai River bed, Kalimandir in Chasapara, Palace of Maharaja of Dumka and Science Museum which can be visited in half of a day with a lunch break at the picnic spot on the bank of Kansai. From Purulia, one can go to Ajodhya Pahar and Mukutmonipur and spend a night in the hill surrounded by the forests. Ample of jungle animals can be seen in the evening when they come to

drink water. A small trekking experience can be had at Ajodhya Pahar which is famous for mountaineering training in West Bengal. Seeing Chow Dance on the full moon light in the Ajodhya Pahar is another unforgettable experience. The drum bits and the steps of the Santhal females make one spell bound.

The place is well connected by rail and road. There are three good trains for Purulia those ply in the morning, afternoon and night and takes around 6 hours from Kolkata. Bus services can be availed of from the Central Bus Terminus at Kolkata that takes around 8 hours to reach.

Good accommodations including hotels, Private Bungalows and Govt Tourists Lodges are available in Purulia Town , Ajodhya Pahar and Mukutmanipur. There are forest bungalows in the forest.
