a Professor in English Department. His patriotism made him
to leave the lucrative civil services and joined hand with
Iswarchandra for the upliftment of the Indians.
Later,
he founded a college where he was the Principal. The college
is known as Rastrogruru Surendra Nath College and is located
in Sealdah of Kolkata.
He
then joined Indian National Congress and served as a congressman
till his death. He was elected twice as Congress President.
The
British Government wanted to divide Bengal into two parts.
The eastern part was proposed to be merged to Assam and the
western part was to be added to Bihar. Surendranath led the
agitation against this mischievous deed. The agitation was
named as Banga Bhanga Andolan. Due to his leadership and mobilizing
public opinion all over India, the British authorities had
to restrain themselves from initiating action on the matter.
He was named as Rastro Guru.
The
great patriot died at the age of 77 in Barrackpore on August
06, 1925.
