| Writers'
Building and Dalhousie Square |
 |

The seat
of power of British India, Kolkata's central district, the Dalhousie
Square renamed Binoy, Badal, Dinesh Bagh after three brothers who
laid siege to the Writers' Building and were subsequently killed during
the independence struggle, is today much different from what it was
in its most glorious period. Probably the only remaining old landmark
is the tank in the middle of the square. Although the present Writers'
Building is an old heritage building, as well as the General Post
Office to its left, the earlier version of this administrative centre
was quite different as is evident from the old etching (top right).

Writers'
Building then(top) and now(today)
The GPO was built at the location where the Fort William the old
stood. Much of the surrounding parts have been taken over by modern
constructions without a thought of preserving the wide open
spaces and greenery of the area. It is virtually impossible to avoid
the traffic congested streets and lanes to reach the square today.
Had it been well-maintained, the city would perhaps attract more
tourists and visitors from all over the world.
