The General Post Office

The General Post Office is a colossal building with a large dome located on the west of Binoy Badal Dinesh Bagh (formerly Dalhousie Square). As an important public office, it is fairly well maintained and gets a coat of whitewash at regular intervals. A special section for philately enthusiasts display a number of special commemorative stamps and first-day covers in mint condition which can be purchased.

At one time, the original Fort William stood where the General Post Office is located today. There was no obstruction between the fort and the river banks further west. The river has changed its course since then. The exact location of the old fort walls, which was abandoned in 1757 are indicated at the GPO with brass markers.
