temple of Goddess Kali is one of the most sacred places of worship among
the Hindus. In its neighbourhood, the colourful folk art form of Pat painting
which influenced later artistic developments of the Bengal Renaissance
evolved under the patronage of local landlords and priests.
Ironically, the environs of the temple are almost hellish in contrast
to the sacred status of this old temple. A crowd of stalls selling all
sorts of religious objects almost entirely covers the facade of the building.
The entranceway is narrow, crowded and filthy. Inside, it does not get
any better. The canal on its west is extremely polluted. The entire area
is in urgent need of a thorough cleaning drive. This has been the state
of the area for over decades now.
