innings
Before the Madras Test West Indies played three
short test matches of which they was defeated in
one. This was the first test match they was defeated
in India against Eastern region. The fourth test
was in Chipak. The two changes took place in the
Indian Team. Ibrahim and Mantu Banerjee were replaced
by MR Rege and Nirad Chowdhury. This test was the
first and last test of Rege.
This was the first winning test of West Indies in
this season. They won by 193 runs. Actually Jones
and Trim were the heros of this victory. Both they
took 13 wickets of India in two innings. Indian
bowler Fadkar was also a mentionable name. He took
7 wickets in 159 runs. Captain Lala Amarnath also
commit the technical mistake by giving instruction
to Fadkar for bumper. West Indies bowlers also took
a revenge. Jones and Trim attacked similarly like
Indian bowlers. The match took a 'U' turn on the
fourth day. |

They put the extra fielders in leg. 14 wickets were lost
in 164 runs. Winning the toss Captain Godard sent Ray
and Stolmaire as opener. The first partnership scored
239. Their excellent batting charmed the spectators. Ray
scored 109. At the end of the day Clive Wallcot started
batting. Amarnath was changing the bowlers again and again.
But it could produce no effect. At the end of the first
day West Indies scored 315 for 1. On the second day in
first fifteen minutes Pnutu Chowdhury took the wicket
of Stolmaire. Stolmaire scored 160. This was the highest
test score of Stolmaire. After that Wallcot also went
to pavillion without adding a single run. Fadkar himself
took Christiani and Godard. Wicket keeper Prabir Sen caught
the captain Godard while he scored only 24. Then Gomez
came and scored 50. West Indies ended the first innings
when the score was 582. On the second day they scored
267 for 9.
Then India started batting to minimize the chance of follow-on.
Mustaq Ali and Milind Rege were the openers. Gomez and
Jones bowled with an attacking attitude. Mustaq played
well and scored 30 in 40 minutes. While the Indian score
was 41 for 1, Rusi Modi increased the score to 52. In
front of bouncer bowling by Jones Rege could not make
a good score. Hazare came and caught by Godard. Hazare's
personal run was 27. Modi was bold by Farguson. Amarnath
scored 22 and went to pavillion. Adhikari and Fadkar played
very well. Adhikari was caught by Stolmaire bowled by
Jones. At the end of the day India scored 225 for 6. As
30th January was the first death anniversary of Gandhiji,
the game was postponed. India started batting again on
31st January. Mankad was bowled out by Trim after scoring
only one run. Then Fadkar scored 48 and caught by Jones.
India lost the last two wickets in 12 runs. Pnutu Chowdhury
scored 3 runs and was not out. India ended the first innings
in 245. |

2nd innings
India could not save themselves from follow-on by 337
runs. They started batting to cover the deficit in second
innings. India has two more days to cover the follow-on.
But it was difficult to draw in this innings. From the
very begining of the day it was clear that Amarnath's
team would not be able to compete. Jones, Gomez and
Trim became furious in their bowling. They puzzled the
Indian players with their dangerous bumper bowling.
Christiani, Wicks and Wallcot tackled the position behind
the wicket. Rege returned to the pavillion without scoring
a single run. Modi scored 6 and bowled by Gomez. Mustaq
scored 14 and caught by Wallcot before the lunch break.
Before lunch India scored 29 for 3. After the lunch
Amarnath and Hazare started batting. But Amarnath was
bowled by Jones while he scored only 6. The short pitch
ball struck the wicket touching his waist. Adhikari
scored 1. Hazare scored 52 runs and showed a splendid
performance. But inspite of these no one could save
India from her defeat in this series.
